2017 SWIS-ISWA Competition on Sustainable Waste Management Essay

The authors of the best essays will be awarded scholarship to attend the ISWA-SWIS Winter School (to be held at UTA from January 16-27, 2017). However, full time students will be given preference for scholarship. SWIS has introduced these scholarships to promote the importance of sustainable waste management for developing healthy and sustainable urban cities.


The essay topic (this must be country or city specific) may include, but is not limited, to the following:

Collection Methods/Efficiency of Municipal Solid Waste – Challenges in Technology and Culture

Open Dumps – Its Effect on Public Life and Health (such as impact of hazardous waste going to the landfill, challenges and opportunities for informal sector, solutions for closing open dumps)

Public/Community Participation and Assistance in Solid Waste Management

Waste Management Business – Entrepreneurship for Young Professionals (such as perspectives and business opportunities pointing towards a sustainable future)


Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability


Scholarships cover the following:

Free registration to the 2017 ISWA-SWIS Winter School at UTA

Lodging and transportation during their stay for the winter school

Free air round-trip ticket from country of residence to DFW Airport, Dallas, Texas will be provided to a limited number of applicants.

Currently enrolled as students in the following (or similar) programs with a strong interest in sustainability/environmental issues and solid waste professionals:

Civil/Environmental Engineering;

Urban and Regional Planning;

Social Science or Environmental/International Policy Studies;

Business – with a strong connection/interest in environmental issues

Format and Requirements

Essay must be submitted in the paper format attached in the folder as doc/docx file. Unformatted essays will be disqualified.

Essays must be single-spaced with font size of 11 Arial. The Essay must be written in English.

Essay must be maximum 8 pages including reference and appendix.

Essays must be the original work of the participants. Plagiarized essays will be immediately disqualified. Participants can seek advice and help from a mentor or supervisor.

The author of the essay is liable for any copyright issues regarding the material he/she submits.

The author gives SWIS and ISWA the right to publish and disseminate his/her essay as a whole or in parts, may it be electronically or printed.

A maximum 250 words biography of the applicants

A maximum 250 words personal statement about why the candidate is interested in participating in the Winter School and how he/she would leverage this experience in the future
